When it comes to the historical background of Cyberghost, I have to tell you that it cannot be ignored. Cyberghost is owned by Kape Technologies, which previously developed malware and collected data for profit under the name Crossrider.

Kape was forced to change its name in 2018 due to the troubling history since it acquired CyberghostVPN in 2017. It has acquired ZenMate in 2018 and Private Internet Access in 2019. It shows that Kape is trying to transform its business and get rid of the shady past.

Logging Policy

Cyberghost VPN clearly states that it takes users’ privacy seriously with a strict no-logs policy. However, Its privacy policy is a bit confusing.

Firstly, Cyberghost operates under Romanian law, and Romania is not part of any surveillance alliance in the world. It means that Cyberghost has no obligation to comply with requests from any foreign intelligence agencies.

Robert Knapp, the Co-founder & Chairman of CyberGhost VPN, claims this below on their official website.

“The only way to secure your data is not to store it.”

CyberGhost also made a statement in its privacy policy that it does not collect or store:

You understand that CyberGhost undertakes no responsibility for your actions. In case of statutory violations by the user, Cyberghost may cooperate with public or private authorities at its sole discretion as provided by law.

This is a conflict with its no-logs policy, and I found this is for those who violate the applicable local laws and regulations.

What’s more interesting is that Cyberghost never collaborates with the authorities, according to the latest transparency report. It receives a few requests from various law enforcement agencies and police departments worldwide.

Overall, CyberGhost VPN can be trusted now, at least for now.

CyberGhost VPN Speed Test

CyberGhost VPN is not the fastest VPN out there, but the local servers are very reliable except for long-distance servers.

For this CyberGhost VPN review, I tested seven servers on Windows from our physical testing lab in Seattle, US.

I used CyberGhost’s Best Server Location feature to test. First, I tried the servers in the US, and the download speeds were reduced to 54.39Mbps. This is not too slow, but it’s slower than the baseline. And Canadian servers have the same situation as the US.

For long-distance servers, CyberGhost performs worse than local servers except for Australia. Australia server’s ping time is slightly higher than the US, but the download speeds are very close to the US servers.

In my testing, I watched streaming in HD with Cyberghost VPN, but I still would like to see improvement and optimization for long-distance servers.

CyberGhost was launched with only 67 servers in 2011, and today, it has a pervasive network with over 6,830 servers in 90 countries worldwide. Also, most of them are physical location servers in popular countries, and some are virtual locations.

When a server is overloaded, Cyberghost will tell you via Load in the application. If you still can’t find the available servers, you can request VPN servers via customer support. Cyberghost will expand the server network to cover it later.

Surprisingly, I found Cyberghost works very well for unblocking the US Netflix library on our testing, even we tested it on mobile or computer.

We also could get access to the British, French, and German libraries with other Netflix location servers.

However, we failed to unblock BBC iPlayer with the UK server. And I found Cyberghost VPN had received many inquires about this problem, and it also published an announcement about streaming status. Four streaming services are waiting for fixing:

Is CyberGhost a Good for Torrenting?

Cyberghost offers many torrent-optimized servers to help you to secure your downloads. Most of Cyberghost’s servers support P2P traffic, and you can find them on all its apps.

It’s easy to choose the best server while torrenting on the distance or load. The strong 256-AES military-grade encryption will prevent your torrenting traffic from leaking, and the DNS-leak protection and Kill Switch feature will add extra protection for you.

Cyberghost also launched NoSpy servers dedicated for torrenting and data protection, but it is independently operated.

Cyberghost offers P2P-optimized servers in all city-level server countries except for Australia, and not all countries allow P2P traffic.

CyberGhost VPN Works in China, UAE & more?

Cyberghost VPN couldn’t work in China even if it boasts that it can help you break all restrictions and reclaim your internet.

I tested all Cyberghost’s apps in my China physical location, and I can’t even log into my account correctly. However, you can get access to Chinese online services with Cyberghost’s China servers.

As blocks are regularly updated and upgraded, fewer and fewer VPNs can bypass all restrictions properly. It appears that Cyberghost also does not work in other heavily-censored countries such as Iran, Turkey, and the UAE.

However, there are a few VPNs that work well for stopping online censorship with obfuscation technology. If you are looking for them, I highly recommend Hotspot Shield or ExpressVPN. They are still working effectively, although the GFW has blocked numerous VPNs.
