What is CyberGhost VPN?

CyberGhost VPN is a VPN software company headquartered in Bucharest, Romania. It was founded in 2011 with only 67 servers. After nearly a decade of development, CyberghostVPN has grown a vast server network with over 6800+ servers in 90 countries worldwide.

When it comes to the historical background of Cyberghost, I have to tell you that it cannot be ignored. Cyberghost is owned by Kape Technologies, which previously developed malware and collected data for profit under the name Crossrider.

Kape was forced to change its name in 2018 due to the troubling history since it acquired CyberghostVPN in 2017. It has acquired ZenMate in 2018 and Private Internet Access in 2019. It shows that Kape is trying to transform its business and get rid of the shady past.

Logging Policy

Cyberghost VPN clearly states that it takes users’ privacy seriously with a strict no-logs policy. However, Its privacy policy is a bit confusing.

Firstly, Cyberghost operates under Romanian law, and Romania is not part of any surveillance alliance in the world. It means that Cyberghost has no obligation to comply with requests from any foreign intelligence agencies.

Robert Knapp, the Co-founder & Chairman of CyberGhost VPN, claims this below on their official website.

“The only way to secure your data is not to store it.”

CyberGhost also made a statement in its privacy policy that it does not collect or store:

  • Your IP address
  • Your DNS queries
  • Your browsing history
  • The web content you accessed
  • Your connection timestamps
  • Your disconnection timestamps
  • Your session duration
  • Your bandwidth usage
  • The VPN servers you connect to

Timo Beyel, the CTO of CyberGhost VPN, also does that like the CEO.

“Here at CyberGhost, we’ve always followed the Privacy by Design principle. We don’t collect any type of data we don’t absolutely need. It’s the most reliable approach for us to provide you with a secure infrastructure and protect your digital privacy.”

And, Cyberghost VPN was the first one in the VPN industry to publish a transparency report since 2011. You can get more details of requests from various third parties. Cyberghost VPN increases the frequency once every three months to keep transparency with users in 2019.

It also completed its first independent audit by QSCert for the implemented Information Safety Management System (ISMS) back in March 2012.

Everything that CyberGhost did show, it does put your privacy and security first.

However, there is something that caught my attention in the terms and conditions.

You understand that CyberGhost undertakes no responsibility for your actions. In case of statutory violations by the user, Cyberghost may cooperate with public or private authorities at its sole discretion as provided by law.

This is a conflict with its no-logs policy, and I found this is for those who violate the applicable local laws and regulations.

What’s more interesting is that Cyberghost never collaborates with the authorities, according to the latest transparency report. It receives a few requests from various law enforcement agencies and police departments worldwide.

Overall, CyberGhost VPN can be trusted now, at least for now.

CyberGhost VPN Speed Test

CyberGhost VPN is not the fastest VPN out there, but the local servers are very reliable except for long-distance servers.

For this CyberGhost VPN review, I tested seven servers on Windows from our physical testing lab in Seattle, US.

  • Local Servers: US, CA
  • Long-distance Servers: UK, JP, TW, AU, SG

I used CyberGhost’s Best Server Location feature to test. First, I tried the servers in the US, and the download speeds were reduced to 54.39Mbps. This is not too slow, but it’s slower than the baseline. And Canadian servers have the same situation as the US.

For long-distance servers, CyberGhost performs worse than local servers except for Australia. Australia server’s ping time is slightly higher than the US, but the download speeds are very close to the US servers.

In my testing, I watched streaming in HD with Cyberghost VPN, but I still would like to see improvement and optimization for long-distance servers.

CyberGhost VPN Server Locations

CyberGhost was launched with only 67 servers in 2011, and today, it has a pervasive network with over 6,830 servers in 90 countries worldwide. Also, most of them are physical location servers in popular countries, and some are virtual locations.

cyberghost-vpn-serverscyberghost-vpn-servers
cyberghost-vpn-servers

When a server is overloaded, Cyberghost will tell you via Load in the application. If you still can’t find the available servers, you can request VPN servers via customer support. Cyberghost will expand the server network to cover it later.

I also found Cyberghost regularly update their network to relieve network congestion and server overload problem. There are available city-level servers in the following countries:

  • Australia (2 cities, 240 servers)
  • Canada (3 cities, 361 servers)
  • France (2 cities, 622 servers)
  • Germany (3 cities, 690 servers)
  • Italy (2 cities, 129 servers)
  • Spain (2 cities, 128 servers)
  • Switzerland (2 cities, 167 servers)
  • United Kingdom (3 cities, 988 servers)
  • United States (11 cities, 1304 servers)

There are three types of optimized servers for your needs:

  • P2P downloading
  • Streaming online
  • Dedicated IP servers (Extra Paid Service)
  • NoSpy servers (Extra Paid Service)

Apps, Extensions, and Compatibility

Apps

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • iOS
  • Android

Cyberghost is almost compatible with all popular platforms and devices, including Windows, macOS, IOS, and Android. It also offers a simple CLI-type (Command Line Interface) application for Linux.

For installation, Cyberghost offers a very detailed step-by-step guide on the support center. Cyberghost is one of the best VPNs for compatibility.

It’s good news that Cyberghost allows you to connect up to seven devices simultaneously so that you can use one Cyberghost account with your families or friends.

It is important to note that you should log out of a device via the CyberGhost website while switching to new devices.

Game Consoles & Streaming Devices

I have rarely seen a VPN compatible with so many gaming consoles and streaming devices like Cyberghost VPN. Cyberghost in-house DNS service is available for gaming consoles.

Also, you can enjoy Cyberghost service via the router.

  • AppleTV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Chromecast
  • Chromecast Nintendo
  • Nintendo PlayStation
  • PlayStation
  • Roku
  • Xbox

Cyberghost VPN also offers native apps for Amazon Fire TV Stick, so there are many extra features out there. Cyberghost VPN is the right choice for unblocking get-blocked content without buffering.

  • Hulu Android TV – United States
  • Disney+ – United States
  • Youtube TV – United States
  • HBO Max – United States

Apple TV does not support VPN software installation, but you can use Cyberghost VPN via changing your DNS settings or router.

Browser Extensions

Cyberghost provides dedicated browser plugins for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It’s completely free and handy to help you browse anonymously and get access to geo-restricted content.

cyberghostvpn-browser-extension
cyberghostvpn-browser-extension

But you may get disappointed about the limitation of the browser extension, only eight servers in 4 countries, no kill switch, no multiple protocol support, no smart rules. And it’s less secure than the VPN applications.

  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Romania
  • the United States

If the Cyberghost browser plugin is not suitable for your needs, the VPN apps are worth your consideration.

CyberGhost VPN unblocks Netflix, BBC iPlayer & torrenting?

Cyberghost allows you to unblock so many streaming services with optimized servers, including US Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO NOW, Disney+, and more.

cyberghost-vpn-streaming

You can easily find specialist streaming servers via the Cyberghost application, and there are all clearly labeled with streaming service that can unblock.

  • Netflix FR – France
  • Netflix DE – Germany
  • Netflix UK – United Kingdom
  • Netflix US – United States
  • Amazon Prime – United States
  • BBC iPlayer – United Kingdom

  • 7TV – Germany
  • ZDF – Germany
  • ARD – Germany

Surprisingly, I found Cyberghost works very well for unblocking the US Netflix library on our testing, even we tested it on mobile or computer.

We also could get access to the British, French, and German libraries with other Netflix location servers.

However, we failed to unblock BBC iPlayer with the UK server. And I found Cyberghost VPN had received many inquires about this problem, and it also published an announcement about streaming status. Four streaming services are waiting for fixing:

  • ITV
  • Channel 4
  • TF1
  • BBC iPlayer

In summary, Cyberghost is one of the best VPN providers for unblocking geo-restricted content.

Is CyberGhost a Good for Torrenting?

Cyberghost offers many torrent-optimized servers to help you to secure your downloads. Most of Cyberghost’s servers support P2P traffic, and you can find them on all its apps.

cyberghost-vpn-torrenting
cyberghost-vpn-torrenting

It’s easy to choose the best server while torrenting on the distance or load. The strong 256-AES military-grade encryption will prevent your torrenting traffic from leaking, and the DNS-leak protection and Kill Switch feature will add extra protection for you.

Cyberghost also launched NoSpy servers dedicated for torrenting and data protection, but it is independently operated.

Cyberghost offers P2P-optimized servers in all city-level server countries except for Australia, and not all countries allow P2P traffic.

CyberGhost VPN Works in China, UAE & more?

Cyberghost VPN couldn’t work in China even if it boasts that it can help you break all restrictions and reclaim your internet.

I tested all Cyberghost’s apps in my China physical location, and I can’t even log into my account correctly. However, you can get access to Chinese online services with Cyberghost’s China servers.

As blocks are regularly updated and upgraded, fewer and fewer VPNs can bypass all restrictions properly. It appears that Cyberghost also does not work in other heavily-censored countries such as Iran, Turkey, and the UAE.

However, there are a few VPNs that work well for stopping online censorship with obfuscation technology. If you are looking for them, I highly recommend Hotspot Shield or ExpressVPN. They are still working effectively, although the GFW has blocked numerous VPNs.

cyberghost-vpn-features
cyberghost-vpn-features

Cyberghost offers standard industry protocols like other VPN providers, including IEKv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard®. There is a little different while choosing network protocols on different devices.

WireGuard®, a fast and modern protocol, combines OpenVPN’s security with the IKEv2’s fast speeds. It’s the right choice for high performance and excellent VPN protection.

WireGuard® is the default protocol on IOS and Android, and it also supports macOS and Linux. But if you want to use the new WireGuard® protocol on your Windows, you need to upgrade to CyberGhost VPN version 8.

I tested Cyberghost and found that there is no IP, WebRTC, and DNS leaking. In a word, Cyberghost is safe to use.

CyberGhost VPN Supports Ad Blocker?

Block Ads is one of many connection features like Block Malicious Websites, Data Compression, Block Online Tracking, and Automated HTTPS Redirect.

cyberghost-vpn-features
cyberghost-vpn-features

Adblock is not activated by default. It would be best if you turned it on manually to get a smooth experience while browsing. Also, you can enable other features together for extra protection.

Mainly, I highly recommend enabling the Automated HTTPS Redirect feature. It forces your network connection to HTTPS to ensure you more secure.

CyberGhost VPN Offers Static or Dedicated IP Addresses?

Cyberghost does provide dedicated IP addresses, but it is an add-on to your subscription. You can get it for 5 USD a month, and it’s available in the US, Germany, France, UK, and Canada.

cyberghost-vpn-dedicated-ip

After purchasing the add-on, you will get the secret activation token. Then you can redeem it with your Cyberghost account and apps. Keep in mind that the secret token can’t be recovered once you lost it, so you had better keep it somewhere safe.

CyberGhost VPN Customer Support

Customer support is essential to us when having trouble. CyberGhost VPN doesn’t let me down. It offers a 7/24 live chat and ticket support.

There is a very informative library in the support center, and you can find detailed guides, Troubleshooting, F.A. Qs, and announcements.

cyberghost-vpn-support

You can find a big blue ‘Support’ button in the bottom right corner of Cyberghost’s official website.

Before you start a chat with the live agent, Cyberghost will ask you to search and show you related questions and solutions. Or you can directly click the ‘Live chat’ button to get help. You can get assistance while using the following languages:

  • English
  • German
  • French
  • Romanian

As you can see, Cyberghost also provides streaming service real-time status on the support page. This is sweet.

Cyberghost accepts popular international payments, including Visa, credit card, and PayPal. It also supports Apple Pay and Google Pay in some countries. CyberghostVPN will detect your IP address to determine whether to show them.

It’s much better than that Cyberghost supports bitcoin payment for more privacy.

Cyberghost has a straightforward and risk-free refund policy. But it provides a 14-day refund policy and a 45-day refund policy for others.

However, you won’t enjoy any refund policy if you subscribed to Cyberghost VPN via cryptocurrency payments or the App Store.

CyberGhost VPN VS ExpressVPN

Cyberghost is one of the best VPNs out there, but it‘s not the right choice for anti-censorship. However, ExpressVPN is the No.1 for high-level censorship countries like China or Russia. ExpressVPN still works well in China, and the GFW blocks even so many VPN providers.

Click here to Visit ExpressVPN or Read ExpressVPN Review.

CyberGhost VPN VS NordVPN

Cyberghost does unblock so many online streaming services, but its long-distance servers are not fast enough. NordVPN servers are super fast, and it works well for unblocking geo-blocked content with the SmartPlay feature. NordVPN is also comparably priced to CyberGhost.

However, Cyberghost is not perfect. Its long-distance servers need to optimize, and it can’t bypass the GFW in China. I would like to see it improved and optimized for a better experience.
